While drinking juice used to be all the rage, smoothies are where it’s at! Why? Because you get the whole food and not just some of it. If you juice fruits and veggies, you miss out on the awesome nutrition that the fiber / peel offers.
Benefits of smoothies:
- Power-packed with nutrition!
- Green produce chlorophyll, which oxygenate your body
- Lose weight
- Improved focus and mental clarity
- Improved bone and joint function
- Stronger immune system
- Better digestion, more regular
- Healthier hair, skin and nails. Hair and nails may grow faster! Skin becomes more radiant!
- More energy
- Reduce cravings for sugar and salt (we all can use help reducing those cravings_
- Receive fewer mood swings
Depending on the ingredients, you get different benefits. It is also important to mix up your greens so you don’t use the same one’s all the time. Did you know that if you all ate were spinach, it could make you sick? Apparently, there are toxins in greens that can build up in your system and make you sick. It is natures way of keeping animals (and people) from just eating one kind…self-defense mechanism of the plant. I found that interesting!
With that in mind, when I started my Green Smoothie ventures over 3 years ago, I took baby steps. Started with less strong greens, like romaine lettuce. I progressed to spinach and eventually to kale, collard greens, swiss chard and even mustard greens. The mustard green smoothie was a big FAIL. Oh my…clearly they make mustard from those! Now, I am used to green smoothies and the taste does not bother me.
Make sure to do not go over board with the fruit because it is still sugar, even though natural sugar. Your body still has to break it down. And, eat the rainbow.
As I mentioned, different greens, but also different vegetables and fruits. Your body needs different nutrients from different foods.
Here is one of my absolute favorite recipes. At first, I did not think I would like it. I mean…it has cilantro in it! How weird. Well, it’s yummy! Refreshing and delicious. Give it a try.
Green Goddess Smoothie*
- Medium Banana
- Medium Pear
- 1/2 cup Pineapple (I buy the frozen chunks from Costco)
- 5 Romain lettuce leaves (I usually use Spinach for more nutrition
- 1 handful of Cilantro (to taste, try a little, add more)
- Juice of 1/2 Lime
- 1 TB. Coconut Oil
- 2 cups water
In a high-speed blender, add the water first, then add all of the rest of the ingredients. Blend until creamy. Add ice to your desired thickness. Enjoy!
*This awesome recipe is thanks to the Conscious Cleanse, which I highly recommend you take a peek and try.
I went through a phase of having a green smoothie daily until I came across Shakeology, which is now what I have every day. Why? Because I could not get as much nutrition that is inShakeology into my Green Smoothie. I still will enjoy a green smoothie every once in a while to give my body variety from the ol’ salad.
Remember, every time you eat or drink, you are either feeding disease or fighting it. You pick.
