I will be honest…I really did not know much about the Keto diet. In my humble opinions, diets DON’T work. Sure they might temporarily, but you all know what happens when you are done with the diet, right? Many end up right back where they started, or worse.
Because I have been asked so much about this, I thought I would navigate the waters and figure out…What the heck am I missing? Well…turns out nothing.
The Keto diet plan seems to be getting increased popularity lately with many people report rapid weight loss. Any time someone feels there is a quick fix with minimal effort, many jump on the bandwagon. But does this really work? AND is it healthy?
In a nutshell, the Keto diet is a strict low or no carbohydrate eating plan. This forces the body into a state of ketosis. In ketosis, the body burns fat reserves for energy…basically because it has not carbs to burn! At first glance, this sounds like a fabulous idea. Burning excess fat for fuel…that’s our goal, right? People want to lose weight so what do they do, try to burn more calories than they take in. Dining on steak, butter and bacon seems pretty awesome to many. Many people are losing weight and happy with their results, so it must be good? Right?
Well, there are some huge concerns you should be aware of. Ketosis ia a mild for of ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis most affects people with Type 1 diabetes and is the leading cause of death for people with diabetes who are under 24 years of age. This is not to say that a healthy person is endangered by mild ketoacidosis, but it is not without risk.
The body is not so selective in which reserves it starts to burn for energy. Guess what? It also burns muscle!! This can include your heart muscle. Before you even get to the point where your body is utilizing body reserves for energy, one of the first things that occurs is mild dehydration. Almost all of the rapid weight loss is due to the loss of water weight. But all of that will come right back when the keto diet stops.
Most important here is not whether the keto diet works or not but there is absolutely nothing about it that provides the human body with complete nutrition that we require for optimum health. Even if short term, your gody still needs healthy fuel. As I explain to many, one of the main reasons diets fail is because people are short-changing their body of nutrition that it requires on a daily basis. When the body’s nutrients are depleted, cravings start. And then you have a battle with cravings!
Losing weight is hard. It take time, effort, consistency, and patience. Taking shortcuts can harm your health. Being unhealthy is not attractive. If you focus more on your health first, with healthy nutrition of whole foods and effective exercise, the weight loss will occur. The good news is that if you trust the process and work on healthy lifestyle habits, the side effects can include you losing weight, toning up, having better digestion, having more energy, sleeping better…just to name a few. And you avoid of the pitfalls of fad diets.
